The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne is the major paediatric hospital in Victoria, and provides a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and adolescents. It is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research and education. In its role as a leading paediatric teaching centre, the hospital has affiliations with the University of Melbourne and LaTrobe University The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute is based at the Royal Children's Hospital providing a bench to bedside process within the single site. and links with other universities in post graduate studies.

 

The Department of Respiratory Medicine at RCH provides tertiary paediatric respiratory care, education, training and research and has led the world in the establishment of paediatric pulmonology as a distinct and important branch of medicine. The Cystic Fibrosis unit was established in 1953 and has a long standing reputation in providing world leading research into cystic fibrosis. Presently is supervises the care of over 300 children with CF. It was one of the first units in the world to investigate the use of regular bronchoscopy with lavage of the lower airways as a method of assessing lower airway disease and has conducted studies in early lung function in infants with CF since the 1970’s.
