Epithelial cellsRespiratory epithelial cells line the airways of the lung. These cells form a barrier that stops particles and bacteria from entering the lungs and is the first line of defence. In cystic fibrosis (CF) this barrier is abnormal due to the abnormal function of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor (CFTR).
We collect epithelial cells from the windpipe of children with CF when they are asleep at the time of their annual BAL. This is called a bronchial brushing. We are able to grow the epithelial cells and use them for a number of investigations.
